Review
Get your mining gear ready to dig for giant gems on the slot from BetSoft Gaming. Gemmed features the newly developed MaxPays game engine with 40,503 ways to win and randomly changing symbols sizes on every spin. Wild substitutions and a bonus round with up to 50 free spins can lead to wins of up to 21,667 times your win.
Slot Details
Gemmed is a video slot with 9 reels, 9 rows and 40,503 ways to win. Pays awarded for three to nine contiguous symbols, which touch each other either adjacent or diagonally from left to right. Bigger symbol blocks are worth more as they will pay out all combinations that pass through them. The symbol sizes range from 1×1 to huge 9×9 blocks.
You can dig for the shiny gems on desktop or mobile from 0.10 to 10 credits per spin. The game has medium to high volatility with an RTP of 96.46%. The Autoplay function allows you to set 5 to 100 consecutive spins to be played without interruption.
A serene meadow is in the background of the giant game window that is flanked by a pair of old trees. The entire design gives the appearance a mining feel with gems in various sizes dominating the reels and low-value royals being held on stone blocks. An enchanted soundtrack is the main audio and only interrupted by the usual reel and win count noises.
All pay symbols expect scatters can appear as a single symbol, naturally stacked or in blocks from 1×2 to 3×3 sizes. They start at the low end with the card royals from 9 through to A with a single nine-of-a-kind awarding 2.5x your bet. They are followed by differently coloured gemstones, each marked with a symbol – moon crescents, mushrooms, gooseberries, flowers, leaves, raindrops, ice crystals and the sun. Hit nine across the reels to win 3x to 10x your stake.
A rainbow-coloured gem is the wild symbol, substituting for all regular symbols while an icon with a trio of cut gemstones in yellow, orange and blue colours acts as the scatter symbol.
Gemmed Slot Features
Reading the maximum amount of win ways, we anticipated another iteration of the Megaways engine which has not only variable symbol sizes but also a random number of ways to win on each spin and a cascading pay mechanic. That doesn’t mean that the MaxPays engine is not a mathematical feat as it is still a highly complex concept to determine a spin result.
The game is not an all-ways-pay slot as the number of ways is actually fixed at 40,503 where symbols need to touch either diagonally or horizontally to lead to a winning combination. The engine randomly decides on the size of the pay symbols to appear on a spin, which has a significant impact on potential winnings. Having three matching 3×3 blocks side by side would undoubtedly lead to a mega win.
While figuring out the workings of the game engine it became clear that the slot has only one feature to report. Hitting minimum five scatters anywhere on the reels in one spin will trigger the free spins feature. It starts with 15 free spins for five scatters and goes up to 50 free spins for 10 or more scatters landing on the triggering spin, which can be indefinitely retriggered.
There are no additional modifiers or multipliers active in the free spins which is a slight disappointment as it would add extra suspense to the bonus round. In our opinion, it is an opportunity missed by the developer to make this game a real bomb. Instead, the free spins are simple base game spins that are, well, free. The win potential is still rather staggering, peaking at 21,667 times your bet.
Final Verdict
BetSoft would not have been the first to develop its own take on the immensely Megaways game engine. Play’n GO, Red Rake Gaming and Habanero are some of the studios that successfully released games with variable reel sets. However, BetSoft stopped short and opted for a fixed amount of ways to win and focussed on different symbol sizes.
The slot looks impressive but also slightly confusing as matching symbols need to touch for a winning combination. At times, it looked like an uphill task to hit any win with five or more symbols over dozens of spins. Since the pays are minuscule for a four of a kind, that it can be quite a balance drainer. Overall though a fun slot to play with huge win potential when the right gems fall into place.
