Books of Tao is a video slot with five reels, three rows and 10 fixed paylines. Wins are awarded for two to five matching symbols landing on a line from left to right only. You can delve into Far East philosophy on desktop and mobile from 0.20 to 200 credits per spin. The game has high volatility with a generous RTP of 96.51%.

A serene mountainous scenery is opening up when you load the game with a traditional temple entrance serves as the frame for the reel set. Two gracious white cranes flank the reels while other typical Taoist symbols dominating on the reels. That includes now DreamTech Gaming who did not simply clone the standard “Book of …” special expanding symbol mechanic but added their own twist to the gameplay that separates it from the over 100 generic copies of Book of Ra (the first to use the mechanic).

The first part of the mentioned twist transpires in the base game. Keep an eye on the three Yin-Yang cylinders turning at the start of each spin. The Special Expanding Spin feature will trigger if one, two or three pay symbols appear on the cylinders. When sufficient of the selected symbols land on the reels, they will expand vertically to cover the entire reel and award wins for all pay lines, even when they are not adjacent. It will need minimum three low and medium- paying symbols or minimum two monk symbols anywhere on the screen to see them expand and award a win. The wins from the expanding symbol are paid on top of any potential line wins.

Hitting minimum three Yin-Yang scatters anywhere on the reels in one spin will trigger 10 free spins, which can be re-triggered indefinitely. Before the round starts, one, two or three pay symbols will be randomly selected to act as the Special Expanding Symbol for the round. Retriggers will not award additional expanding symbols. The same mechanic as in the random base game feature comes into play when sufficient selected symbols land on a free spin.

Final Verdict

There you go, DreamTech has officially joined the long list of slot developers to feature a “Book of …” slot in their portfolio. And admittedly, it is one of the best I have seen, be it with regards to the visuals or the extra twists built into the gameplay. The only slightly negative to report is the minimum bet of 0.20 credits where all others start at just 0.10.
