Review
Get to experience the puzzling simplicity of the Rubik’s Cube on a set of slot reels by Hacksaw Gaming. Part of the Pocketz series, Cubes retained the charm of the iconic 1974 invention whilst adding the thrill of progressive grid expansions and multipliers, bonus rounds and wins up to 3,167x your stake into the mix.
Slot Details
Cubes is a 5×5 grid slot with cluster pays and progressive expansion. During the gameplay, the size can increase up to an 11×11 format. Wins are paid for clusters of five or more matching symbols landing horizontally and/or vertically connected. You can play the Rubick’s Cube-style game on desktop or mobile from 0.20 to 100 credits per spin. It has medium volatility with an RTP of 96.35%.
With a generic, yet modern structured background and an upbeat soundtrack, symbols on the grid include a range of small cubes reminiscent of the iconic cube, each side in a different colour – blue, purple, turquoise, red, yellow and green. All have identical payouts, peaking at 40x your bet for clusters of 25 or more matching symbols. There are no wilds or scatters on this slot.
Cubes Slot Features
In the short period since their founding in 2018, Hacksaw Gaming has managed to create a niche for themselves, mainly with unconventional game formats and mechanics that no other developer has used. As part of their Pocketz series that is geared towards mobile play, Cubes fits perfectly into the niche of unconventional formats as it does not have spinning reels or tumbling symbols and instead comes with a game flow that resembles the fabled Rubik’s Cube.
It all starts in a 5×5 format and landing clusters of five or more matching squares horizontally and/or vertically connected will be a winner. However, no evaluation is done yet and instead, the grid will increase to a 7×7 size in a first step. More symbol squares are added and should it improve the initial winning cluster or create a new one, then the process is repeated. Thus, the format will grow to 9×9 and in a last step to 11×11.
Keep one eye on the cube in the centre of the grid as will award a win multiplier should it become part of a winning cluster. The multiplier will be equal to the number of symbols in the cluster, up to a maximum of x22. For example, hitting a winning cluster with six symbols that includes the centre cube will multiply the win by x6, however, only not wins from other clusters.
Your other eye should be on the slot title on top. It will light up consecutively as you hit clusters in different colours, one character per colour. Lighting up all five character of the word CUBES will trigger up to 10 Free Spins, which cannot be retriggered. The game will lead to a second screen where you must pick one of six cubes to reveal the number of free spins and a random colour.
During the feature, any grid expansion is not reset between spins and reaching the max 11×11 will then be kept for the remainder of the free spins. All wins with the selected colour will be sticky with any further matching symbols landing adjacent turning sticky too. Wins are evaluated and paid after every free spin. Please note, that the multiplier is disabled during the bonus round.
And that’s not the end yet. Getting a sticky cluster of 70 or more symbols during the free spins will trigger the Colour Blast, awarding an extra one-time prize of 2,500 times your bet (not a typo) which will be added to the overall featuring winnings.
Final Verdict
What an unconventional yet original and entertaining game. Every fan of the Rubik’s Cube (aren’t we all?) will love to play a few rounds on this slot from Hacksaw Gaming. While simply seeing cubes jumping around might get boring after a while, the creators added ample features and extras that will keep you engaged. Beware though, it can be a tough game at times stubbornly refusing to light up the entire slot title for a free spins trigger, just like solving the Rubik’s Cube itself. The overall win potential is not very high but well sufficient for a few turns on the good old cube.
