Review
Uncover icy gems on the slot creation from JustForTheWin and collect them in the symbol storage to score wins of up to 1,000 times your bet in a single Superspin. The game is a follow-up or better said a clone of Reel Talent where JFTW introduced the Symbol Storage pay mechanic.
Slot Details
Icy Gems is a video slot with five reels, three rows, and 20 fixed pay lines. Heat up the reels with wild substitutions, a symbol storage mechanic with respins and three different Superspin options. The maximum win in a single spin tops 1,000 times the stake but can be higher for an entire spin sequence that includes respins. Just like Reel Talent, the game is trending towards high volatility with an industry-average RTP of 96.03%. The slot is too designed in HTML5 format, making it available for play on mobile and desktop devices.
A simplistic game design indicates that Icy Gems was produced on a small budget, which is not unusual for clones. Graphics and animations are kept simple and to the minimum required to still have some sort of decent look. The symbol storage on the left on the game window is part of the new pay mechanic and will play a large role to trigger the main feature. A generic soundtrack is changing into a dramatic crescendo on winning and teaser spins.
Reel Talent has nine regular pay symbols and one wild symbol. At the low end are the J to A card royals, followed by green, red, purple and blue games. The slot logo is again the top paying symbol. The wild symbol is a tile with a large ‘W’. There are no scatter or bonus symbols on this slot as the feature is triggered by collecting consecutive wins in the Symbol Storage.
The Symbol Storage Feature
A storage display is visible on the left of the game window that will initiate the main feature on Icy Gems. The aim is to score three wins to fill up the storage and trigger one of three Superspins. When a win is scored on one or more pay lines, the winning symbol for each line is added to the Symbol Storage. A respin is awarded if there are still empty positions in the storage. The respins end when there are no empty positions left or no win is landing on a respin. Wins are accumulated during a spin sequence and paid in one amount once it ends.
Collecting three symbols in a spin sequence in the storage will award one Superspin, during which only the collected symbols are present on the reels. The game has three options with increasing win potential for the bonus feature:
- Stage 1 – Silver is awarded when three different symbols are in the Symbol Storage with only the three symbols present on the reels during the Superspin.
- Stage 2 – Gold is awarded with just the two collected symbols on the reels in the Superspin
- Stage 3 – Win Big has only the single collected symbol on the reels in the Superspin
Stage 3 is obviously the most lucrative option as it will lead to a full screen of the collected symbol. Wins for a full screen range from 70x for lowest symbol and 1,000x the stake for the top symbol. All wins, including those from the respins leading to the triggering of the Superspin are accumulated and paid at the end of the feature.
Final Verdict
We are no friends of cloned slots, especially when the original wasn’t that exciting. But Icy Gems is even worse. Where JFTW made at least a good effort on the graphics and animation on Reel Talent, they seem to have taken the quick route to churn out another slot with the same pay mechanic. The graphics are simple and generic, and the animations are not really worth mentioning. Plus, we still saw the same issue with the maths model like on Reel Talent as it looks awfully hard to score three consecutive wins to trigger the Superspin at the lowest level, let alone achieving that feat on the top level.
