Review
Venture into a mystical forest on the slot from Just For The Win, powered by Microgaming. Wonder Woods is a lighthearted reel adventure with wild substitutions, mystery symbols and a free spins round with sticky mystery symbols that can turn in to sticky wilds reels and lead to wins of up to 400 times your bet on a single spin.
Slot Details
Wonder Woods is a video slot with five reels, three rows and 20 fixed pay lines. Wins are awarded for three to five matching symbols on a line from left to right only. You can wander into the mystical woods on desktop or mobile from 0.10 to 100 credits per spin. The game has medium volatility with an RTP of 96.03%.
You will be entering an enchanted forest when loading the game with magical trees on either side of the frameless game window. Mystical light rays illuminate the entire setup, highlighting the five reel strips that are oddly filled with fruit symbols. A catchy soundtrack is trying very hard to keep things lively although we felt the urge to mute it after just a few spins.
The pay symbols start at the low end with the card royals from J through to A, awarding 2x to 4x your bet for a single five of a kind. The premiums are cherries, grapes, oranges and the Wonder Woods slot logo. Hit five on a line to win 6x to 20 your stake. A bush of greenery marked with the word itself is the wild symbol, substituting for all regular pay symbols. It pays also 20x your stake when five land on a line. A rainbow-coloured icon with a question mark is the mystery symbol while a star icon marked with ‘Free Spins’ acts as the scatter.
Wonder Woods Slot Features
Just For The Win rarely surprises with sophisticated pay mechanics or exhilarating features. On Wonder Woods, they more or less recycled a range of items that have been used countless times by themselves and competitors on other slots. While that is not always a bad thing, we do like to see some originality once in a while, after all, they call themselves game creators not regurgitators of existing stuff. Well, let’s stop fretting and get on with what’s on offer.
The most common and often frustrating feature is the Mystery Symbol. The rainbow-coloured question mark icons can land on any spin in the base game and free spins. Once all reels stopped, they will reveal a common symbol except scatters. While it will come up with the right choice, you can count on having 9/10 times the wrong symbol hidden under them, which renders it utterly useless at times. Basically, eye candy to get your pulse rate up.
The second feature they included is a good ol’ Free Spins round. Hitting three, four or five scatters anywhere on the reels in one spin will trigger 8, 10 and 12 free spins respectively, which unfortunately cannot be retriggered. During the feature, any Mystery Symbols landing will turn into a sticky Mystery Symbol and stay on the screen for all remaining free spins. While that means mostly more frustrating moments when they unveil yet again the wrong symbol, there is a kicker which could have quite an impact on your winnings. Filling an entire reel with Mystery Symbols will see it transforming into a sticky Wild Reel for the rest of the round. Cover the entire screen and you’ll pocket 400 times your bet on every spin.
Final Verdict
You might have realized by now that we are not exactly excited about this creation from Just For The Win, which will be offered exclusively on Microgaming’s Quickfire platform. And there is a good chance they will be releasing an exact clone in the near future as they have done with all their previous creations, cue in Tiki Vikings and Rising Royals for example. While they mostly impress us with the visuals and overall appearance of their games, we are less enamoured with the lack of originality and the low win potential. Wonder Woods is a truly recreational game that won’t bust your bank either way but will surely eat your balance slowly with little chance to get back to just being on par.
