Review
Brace for a juicy reel experience on the slot from NetEnt. BerryBurst and its more volatile BerryBurst MAX are the sequels to Starburst, NetEnt’s most popular slot released back in 2012. It was time to give it a facelift in an effort to keep the charm and simple gameplay of the original. Cluster Pays was the answer as well as including Expanding Wilds on all reels that will trigger the well-known respin mechanic which can lead to wins of up to 3,000x your bet on the standard version and 6,000x your bet on the MAX variant.
Update 16th December 2020: The BerryBurst MAX version is no longer available as it has been terminated by NetEnt as an end of the year clean-up of their slot catalogue. The standard game can still be found in the casino lobbies but might suffer a similar fate soon.
Slot Details
BerryBurst and BerryBurst MAX are video slots with 5 reels and three rows, featuring the Cluster Pays mechanic to award wins. The game has been also released in a redesigned variant under the name East Sea Dragon King, which is geared towards our Asian slot friends.
NetEnt fans will recognize the mechanic as it has been used in other creations such as The Legend of Shangri-La or Aloha! Cluster Pays. The game does not have pay lines as usual, instead, wins are paid for clusters of minimum five adjacent symbols. The top pay is awarded for a cluster of 15 matching symbols or in combination with wild symbols.
Not much effort and creativity has gone into the design of the background of the frameless game window. However, that does not apply to the pay symbols which appear in 3D style and let especially the fruit symbols look real, like you could just grab them from the reels and eat them. A quirky soundtrack will see many players tip-toeing through their gaming sessions.
Pay symbols start at the low end with the card suits – diamonds, spades and hearts – awarding 50x your stake for a full screen on the standard version and 100x on the MAX version. They are followed by limes, blueberries, oranges and raspberries at the high end. Hitting the maximum cluster with 15 symbols will pay 125x to 500x your bet on the standard game and 250x to1,000x your bet on the MAX variant.
The wild symbol appears as a ‘W’ locked in an ice block and substitutes for all pay symbols. There are no scatters or bonus symbols on this slot as it does not have any bonus features.
BerryBurst and BerryBurst MAX Slot Features
A wild symbol landing anywhere on a reel will expand and lock in place to trigger a respin. Any pays on the initial spin will be awarded before the respin is played. More wilds landing expand and lock as well for an additional respin until no further wilds land or the cluster has reached a full screen of wild symbols. No further Re-Spin is done after the 5th Wild has landed but the win will be automatically doubled, equal to two times 500x your stake on the standard version or two times 1,000x your stake on the MAX version.
Final Verdict
BerryBurst and the more volatile MAX sibling were announced as a sequel to NetEnt’s most successful slot to date, Starburst. While it was much awaited raising expectations for something spectacular, we were rather disappointed that not more creativity went into the design of the game. A bonus feature would have been an evolution from the original but as it stands it is more like a reskin.
