Review
Discover the splendour of Far East lucky charms on the slot from NetEnt. Gold Money Frog is an Asian-themed reviving one of their oldest progressive jackpot games, Super Lucky Frog. Released in 2007, the original was not ported into the HTML5 age and it was all but sure that the mechanics and math model would end up in the eternal archives. However, it wasn’t to be as NetEnt, who are currently on a quest to design games geared towards Asian regions, decided to give the “emperor new clothes”.
Wild substitutions and a free spins round make up the entertainment for the main reel action while a bonus game will provide the chance to win one of three localized progressive jackpots – Minor, Major and Super. Going by history records, the highest payout from the main jackpot came in at €134,665, not too shabby.
Update 16th December 2020: Gold Money Frog is no longer available as it has been terminated by NetEnt as an end of the year clean-up of their slot catalogue.
Slot Details
Gold Money Frog is a progressive video slot with five reels, three rows and 25 fixed pay lines. Wins are awarded for two to five matching symbols on a line from left to right only. You can chase the big jackpots on desktop or mobile from 0.25 to 50 credits per spin. The game has medium volatility with an RTP range of 92.31 to 92.96% which appears very low but is not unusual for progressive slots.
A mountain lake with a sprawling waterfall and blossoming water lilies is in the background of the rather simple game window. Not that it is a bad thing as Asian themed games usually ooze of golden ornaments and it is good to see that NetEnt held back on that. They couldn’t resist all the way and placed a golden bar with the three jackpot displays on top of the reels, which in itself are dominated by typical Asian lucky charms.
The pay symbols start at the low end with the card royals from J through to A, awarding 3x to 4x your bet for a single five of a kind. They are followed by Asian kites, wooden bridges, a brooch-like piece of gold jewellery and the golden money frog. Hit five on a line to win 5x to 20x your stake.
An intricate red icon ornamented with gold and marked with the word itself is the wild symbol, substituting for all regular pay symbols. It is also the top payer with 300x your bet when five land across the reels. A set of three Asian lampoons acts as the scatter while a colourful lucky wheel is the bonus symbol.
Gold Money Frog Slot Features
No doubt, the centre of attention on this game are the three progressive jackpots – Minor, Major and Super. These are localized for each standalone casino or within an entire group. If history serves as a measure, the average payout from the Super Jackpot should be around the €35,000 mark, although that can vary in both directions.
You will need to land three or more bonus symbols on successive reels starting from the left to trigger the Bonus Wheel. The game will lead to a second screen with the wheel, which is divided into 12 sections – four with coins wins, four with the Minor Jackpot, three with the Major Jackpot and one with the Super Jackpot. Nevermind the visual presentation though, as the segments do not imply your real chances to win any of the jackpots as the probabilities of it stopping on any particular spot is determined by the game’s random number generator.
The wheel will start spinning automatically and you can hit “Stop” once the button illuminates or simply wait 10 seconds for it to by itself. Stopping on a coin win will award the displayed amount while stopping on any of the Jackpot wedges will trigger the respective jackpot. The average payouts are estimated to be at €255 for the Minor, €1,860 for the Major and €35,700 for the Super Jackpot.
To keep you interested in your jackpot chase, there is also a Free Spins round which is triggered by landing three or more lampoon scatters anywhere on the reels. The game will award 10, 20 and 30 free spins as well as a coin win of 4x, 50x and 400x your bet for three, four and five scatters respectively, which can be indefinitely retriggered. During the features, all wins except Jackpot pays will be multiplied by x3. The Bonus Wheel can be triggered on any free spin.
Final Verdict
There is an old saying “warmed-up soups rarely taste better”, which leads us to the question whether it applies to Gold Money Frog. After all it is just that, only with a new set of graphics and designed in HTML5 format. Super Lucky Frog was never NetEnt’s most popular slot but it had a relatively large faithful following of jackpot chasers. That will probably be the case for this revived version, although looking at the low RTP might have some players giving it a pass.
The overall win potential in the main game is not really attractive either. According to NetEnt, you can expect up to 714x your bet in the free spins, although the theoretical maximum peaks at 2,000 times bet. The game sheet shows a 1:5 billion spins chance to that to happen. Better to concentrate on chasing the jackpots as those payouts can reach significant 5-figure sums.
