The focal point in the gameplay is the horizontal reel on top of the game window. It holds frozen bonus symbols that can be activated by repeated winning cascades within the same spin sequence. A total of 15 symbols drop onto the grid at the start of each round and scoring a win will see the symbols from a combo shatter and disappear before new ones drop into the empty spaces. At the same time, it will gradually unfreeze the bonus symbols on the horizontal reel. Once you collect three winning symbols on the respective reel, it will bring extra wilds or more symbols into play and thus increasing the ways to win. The set-up and order for the bonus symbols on the extra reel are randomly chosen before the start of each spin.

Keep an eye on the number at the bottom of each bonus symbol which starts at 3 and decreases by 1 for each winning symbol landing on the respective reel. Once three are collected, the bonus symbol on top will unfreeze and apply its effect:

Having three scatters in view will trigger 9 Frozen Spins and a coin win of 5x your bet. Each extra scatter gets you another 5x bet and +1 free spin. Neither will be multiplied by the current active win multiplier. During the feature, any scatter will award +1 spin with no limit to the maximum. The multiplier from the triggering spin will be transferred to the bonus feature and will keep growing by x1 for each winning cascade without resetting between spins.

Final Verdict

Not really sure whether Frozen Gems will be the breakthrough for dynamic reels that Play’n GO has been pursuing for some time to presumably counter the Megaways frenzy. Maybe it is a false equivalency I am trying to imply but at the end of the day, the reels are not fixed and thus you can have anything from 243 to 8,748 betways on each spin, which in turn does not sound very different from the Megaways concept. Time will tell once it is released and the players have made their verdict.
