Slot Details
Legend of the Ice Dragon is a cascading grid slot in a 7×7 format with cluster pays. Wins are awarded for five or more matching symbols landing horizontally and/or vertically connected in a cluster. You can face the mighty beast on desktop, tablet or mobile from 0.20 to 100 credits per spin. The game has high volatility (8/10) with a default RTP of 96.29%. Beware, lower RTP settings can be offered, on this occasion either 94.28%, 91.30% or 87.29%. Always check the help files to find out which version you will be playing.
The pay symbols start at the low end with card suits held on ice blocks – clubs, spades, hearts and diamonds – awarding 15x to 25x your bet for clusters of 30 or more symbols. They are followed by ice sculptures in different shapes and are best distinguished by their colours – green, blue, purple and red. Hit 30+ clusters to win 75x to 500x times your stake. There are no scatters on this slot but a frozen W and a chest with gold coins that will act as wilds.
Legend of the Ice Dragon Slot Features
The master in grid slots is presenting us with another creation, calling on a mighty beast to challenge us in a volatile showdown across the 7×7 grid. While that sounds intriguing, Play’n GO is increasingly reusing the same features on its meanwhile large catalogue of grid slots and thus it does tend to become somewhat predictable. Random wilds will be random wilds, whether created by a wizard’s magical staff or a ferocious beast. Well, let’s take a closer look at the overall package on Legend of the Ice Dragon, it just might surprise us.
As expected for a grid slot, at the core of the gameplay are cascading symbols and cluster pays. Each spin sequence starts with 49 random symbols cascading onto the grid from the top. Hit any winning cluster of five or more connected symbols, and they will be removed before new ones tumble into place, potentially leading to multiple wins within a spin. The process is repeated until no more winning clusters occur after a cascade.
One of three Freezing Features can trigger randomly on a losing spin. Each has a distinct way to modify the current symbols on the reels, potentially leading to a winning cluster once the ice dust settles.
- Hailstorm: Selects a random symbol and highlights 3 occurences together with five other symbols adjacent to them, creating random cluster patterns. Once done, it will either transform the symbols into wilds or destroy them. Up to 3 symbols can turn wild per cluster, maximum 9 in total.
- Avalanche: All occurences of two random symbols are removed and 3 to 7 wilds placed into random empty spaces.
- Blizzard: Creates a pattern and transforms 2 to 5 symbols into wilds before destroying the rest within the pattern.
Any wild landing on the grid will create an ice frame around the position which will stay in view until the end of the current spin sequence. Should another wild cascade onto an existing ice frame, it will increment the multiplier for the frame by x1, up to a maximum of x8. All ice frame multipliers will stay inactive until the Dragon Blast feature is triggered. Should it fail to reach the final feature within a single spin sequence, then all framed positions will reset before the next spin.
All removed winning symbols within a spin sequence will be added to the Ice Crystal Charger on the left of the game window (desktop). Reaching various thresholds will trigger the respective Dragon feature once no more winning clusters occur. The meter can be overcharged, awarding +2 ice frames for every 10 extra charges over the 80 needed for the Dragon Blast feature.
- Tail Lash – 20 Charges: transforms all premium symbols in view into one premium symbol.
- Ice Scorch – 40 Charges: transforms 3 to 6 random symbols on the grid into wilds.
- Destruction – 60 Charges: removes all low-value symbols on the grid.
- Dragon Blast – 80 Charges: turns all symbols with ice frames into wilds and activates the Ice Frame Multipliers.
Prepare for a blast should you manage to fully charge the meter and unleash the Ice Dragon. All ice frames will be activated together with their multipliers and transformed into wilds. However, only the highest multiplier in a cluster will be applied to the win for that symbol. For example, having an x3 frame and an x5 frame in the same cluster will award the x5 multiplier only. The spin sequence continues after the Dragon Blast until no more winning clusters occur. Charge meter, unused ice frames and multipliers are then reset before the next spin sequence starts.
Final Verdict
Legend of the Ice Dragon is, by all means, a well-designed slot with decent graphics, smooth animations and ample surprises. However, I just can’t get past the repetitive nature of the modifiers, the charge meter and the associated features. Anyone who tried a few grid slots from Play’n GO will most probably feel the same. Nevertheless, it is in the end another solid game from the high-speed production lines at the Swedish studio.
