Review
It’s time to call on the luck of the Irish on the slot from Play’n GO. Leprechaun Goes Wild is taking you to the Emerald Isle where a quintuplet of mischievous Leprechaun brothers is welcoming you to join them on a 5×4 reel set as they are about to create the Rainbow Revolution, bringing gold and good fortune to all who follow their cause. Wild substitutions and a Luck of the Irish feature, that will either add more wilds to the current screen or trigger the free spins with sticky wilds, can lead to wins of up to 10,000 times your bet.
Slot Details
Leprechaun Goes Wild is a video slot with five reels, four rows and 20 fixed pay lines. Wins are awarded for three to five symbols on a line from left to right only. You can journey to the Emerald Isle on desktop or mobile from 0.20 to 100 credits per spin. The game has high volatility (9/10) with a default RTP of 96.20%. Some operators might offer the game with lower RTP settings of 94.20% or even just 91.20%, always read the help files to find out which version you will be playing.
Loading the game will take you to a typical Irish realm with the usual lush greenery and billowing white clouds covering part of the blue skies. The game window is held in a wooden frame with Celtic ornaments while the symbols spin on a deep-green canvas. The grid is held on a stone pedestal while the five mischievous Leprechauns are playing their pranks on the reels.
The pay symbols start at the low end with the usual card royals from 10 through to A, although the designers made an extra effort and ornamented them with different flowers that can be found on the Emerald Isle. They award across the board 2x your stake for a single five of a kind. The premiums are your typical Irish icons – horseshoes, beer jug, smoking pipe, green hat and the fabled pot of gold. Hit five on a line to win 10x to 20x your bet.
A quintuplet of identical Leprechauns are as expected the wild symbol, each appearing on its own reel only. From left to right you will see them smoking pipe, smoking a cigar, smiling, cheering with a beer and sad face with a lamp on the final reel. They will substitute for all regular symbols and are at the same time the top payer with 40x your bet when five land across the reels. A 4-leafed clover acts as the scatter, appearing on reels one, three and five only.
Leprechaun Goes Wild Slot Features
Mentioning Dead or Alive or its sequel Dead or Alive II from NetEnt or Street Magic from Play’n GO themselves will probably give away for most players as to what can be expected in terms of features on this Play’n GO creation. It wouldn’t be the first time for them to take inspiration from one of their biggest competitors, namely Crystal Sun which borrowed heavily from NetEnt’s cult slot Starburst. Well, Leprechaun Goes Wild does that from the original DoA game, although Play’n GO altered it again sufficiently and added an extra feature to reduce the commonalities and avoid another embarrassing legal case.
Core to getting our adrenalin pumping on Leprechaun Goes Wild is the fabled or dreaded two scatter teaser, depending on how you look at it. On this occasion, Play’n GO opted to actually let it lead to something and included two options in what they called the Luck of the Irish feature.
- Extra Wilds: One wild is added to a random position on each reel. This could deliver medium wins in the base game or nothing when they don’t line up.
- Extra Scatter: The missing scatter is added to trigger the main event.
Hitting three scatters outright or via the Extra Scatter will trigger the Free Spins feature with a random number of 7, 9, 11 or 13 spins. Any wild landing on a spin will remain sticky until the end of the feature. An additional 3, 5, 7 or 9 free spins are awarded if one or more sticky wilds are on each reel. No further retriggers are possible as the scatters are removed from the reels for the duration of the bonus round. Theoretically, you could fill the entire screen with sticky wilds, which would pay a still modest 800x your bet per spin. The maximum is capped at 10,000 times your bet with a 1:100 million chance for it to happen. For comparison, a full screen of explorers on Book of Dead has a 1:37.5 million probability.
Final Verdict
To be honest, I am not sure how to rate this Play’n GO creation as I am not a big fan of Street Magic to start with. Visually it is the usual quality we come to expect from them and they even made the effort to include not just a free spins round but an extra moment of suspense when two scatters land. Still, DoA is paying 333.33x your bet for a so-called Wild Line, while on Leprechaun Goes Wild we have to make do with 40x bet. Yes, there are more pay lines but how often will it happen to have 8 full Wild Lines in a round to compensate for the lower payout. Time will tell, but I have a hard time imagining how the slot will deliver wins of 10,000 times your bet.
