Hitting any win will activate the symbol display at the top of the game window. All winning symbols will be highlighted, turning them into the special Expanding Symbol for the following spin. Worth noting is that the spin is not free in the base game. Land sufficient and they will expand to cover the entire reel and pay for each way without the need for the symbols to be on adjacent reels.

Every reel can have up to five symbol positions, meaning three scattered special symbols on three reels with five positions will expand and pay accordingly.
