Review
Travel to the Fare East to face two fire-breathing creatures on the slot from Red Tiger Gaming. Dragon’s Luck Megaways is an impressive example of how a reel mechanic can go from a standard slot to a Power Reels version and ultimately become a Megaways game. Without changing too much on the core of the original, Red Tiger managed a seamless transition from just 10 pay lines to 117,649 ways while keeping the suspenseful and fast-paced reel action with mystery coin symbols that can appear in mega sizes of up to 4×4. With the increase in win ways comes also a bigger win potential that peaks now at 10,368 times your bet on a single spin.
Slot Details
Dragon’s Luck Megaways is a video slot with six reels, up to seven rows and up to 117,649 ways to win, using a Pay-Anywhere mechanic and the Megaways game engine, the latter under a licence from Big Time Gaming. Wins are awarded both ways for three to six matching symbols on adjacent reels starting from any reel. You can face the dragon on desktop or mobile from 0.10 to 10 credits per spin. The slot has maximum volatility with a slightly below-average RTP of 95.69%.
With a fire-coloured background that clears up during the gameplay to reveal a serene mountain scene, the giant game window is placed on a stone foundation and encased by two dragon columns of a traditional pagoda-style temple. The two golden dragons will awake on every symbol transformation as well as big wins, breathing giant flames across the reels while a usually relaxing Asian soundtrack goes into dramatic crescendos.
Card royals from 10 to A in an artistic Chinese writing style feature at the low end of the paytable. They are complemented with lotus flowers, koi carp, Chinese figurines and lucky 138 symbols. The latter is the top payer with 38 times your bet for a single six of a kind. There are no wild or scatter symbols on this slot but golden dragon coins, which act as mystery symbols and can appear in 1×1, 2×2, 3×3 or even 4×4 sizes.
Megaways and Pay-Anywhere Mechanic Explained
The beauty of the Megaways engine is the capability to have a different number of ways to win on every spin. At the start of a round, the game will randomly select between two to seven symbols to appear on every reel, delivering anything from 64 to 117,549 ways. And logically, the more ways the higher the chance to hit a big win. However, Red Tiger went for a simplified version on this creation. All reels will have identical configurations with two to seven symbols on every spin, leading to 64, 729, 4,096, 15,625, 46,656 or 117,649 ways to win.
Red Tiger decided to keep the DNA of the fast-paced original and removed the reactive wins that usually are part of the Megaways mechanic. Winning symbols would explode to make room for new symbols to drop into place and potentially creating multiple winners within a spin sequence. This has been replaced on Dragon’s Luck Megaways with the Pay-Anywhere mechanic, which has been the main attraction on the first two games in the Dragon’s Luck mini-series.
Wins are awarded for three to six matching symbols on adjacent reels, starting on any reel. As seen in the example above, having an 10 on reels three, four and five will pay a three-of-a-kind 10s. And since there are no fixed paylines, the matching symbols can be anywhere on the reels as long as they are adjacent.
Dragon’s Luck Megaways Slot Features
Still, in play are also the three reel modifiers that Red Tiger introduced with the first Dragon’s Luck slot. Much of the action on the reels relies on the golden dragon coins which act as mystery symbols and can land on any reel as well in different sizes. The third will be triggered randomly when the dragons on either side of the game window awake.
- Dragon Coin: All single dragon coins landing in a round will spin once to reveal a common pay symbol
- Mega Coin: The dragon coins can also land as 2×2, 3×3 or 4×4 Mega Coins. They will first split into the respective number of single dragon coins before spinning once to reveal as well a common pay symbol. All single and mega coins will always unveil the same symbol.
- Dragons’ Blessing feature: The two dragons on the columns can randomly activate after dragon coins have been flipped. They will turn them one more time to upgrade the revealed symbol to a higher-value symbol to award a bigger win. The maximum you can win in a single spin peaks at 10,368 times your bet.
Final Verdict
Well, it looks like there was still some life left in the Dragon’s Luck mini series and the special pay mechanic, although it might look to some as a stripped-down Megaways game. However, what has been lost by removing wild symbols and a free spins round with progressive multipliers, it makes up with unimpeded and fast-paced reel action, the potential for extra wins with the Pay-Anywhere mechanic and suspenseful moments when the dragon coins land, especially the 4×4 Mega Coins.
Overall, Dragon’s Luck Megaways will better suite the purists among slot players but should also appeal to fans of high-volatility games. Those preferring random and bonus features will be better entertained with Dragon’s Fire Megaways or Golden Leprechaun Megaways.
