Review
The fabled conquistador is embarking on a new reel voyage on the slot from Red Tiger Gaming in collaboration with NetEnt. Gonzo’s Quest Megaways is the second iconic game from the Swedish studio to undergo the Megaways upgrade courtesy of its newly acquired subsidiary. After a visit to the decadently grunting family on Piggy Riches Megaways, we are off to the ancient lands of the Muisca people with Gonzo leading again the search for untold reel treasures that could be worth over 20,000 times your bet.
Aiding you on your quest are avalanching symbols, progressive multipliers, random Earthquake modifiers, Unbreakable Wilds, a Royal Wheel gamble and a Free Falls feature with increased multipliers.

Slot Details
Gonzo’s Quest Megaways is a cascading video slot with six reels, up to 7 rows and up to 117,649 ways to win, using the licensed game engine from Big Time Gaming. You can join the conquistador on his reel voyage from 0.10 to 10 credits per spin (unconfirmed). The game has medium to high variance with an RTP of exactly 95.77%. Beware, Red Tiger offers its games with a variety of RTP settings, which could be substantially lower than the default, e.g. 92.71%. A quick peek into the help files will let you find out which version you will be playing.
Loading the game will see Gonzo back in South America, entering the dense jungle in search of the fabled city of gold. Red Tiger did a great job in keeping the DNA of the original, leaving the graphics and visuals virtually unchanged but gave them a thorough HD upgrade. The game window has been substantially increased to cater for the Megaways grid while Gonzo is still standing on the site doing his silly dances and making his comical comments during the gameplay. Drums and a fuller sound of the original audio complete the makeover.
Red Tiger largely kept the original NetEnt pay symbol set but vastly improved the visual appearance. At the low end are still the depictions of various jungle creatures – birds, fish and snakes and new, a warrior’s face – awarding 0.5x to 0.8x your bet for a single six of a kind. They are followed by four more elaborate masks with a fifth, a stone mask with red jewels and golden crown, added as the top payer. Hit six across the reels to win 1x to 15x your stake. A stone with a carved question mark is the wild symbol, substituting for all pay symbols including the scatter which in turn is an intricate golden mask.
Gonzo’s Quest Megaways Slot Features
It was only a question of time before Red Tiger and NetEnt would give the iconic Gonzo’s Quest the Megaways upgrade. It has been an immensely successful game ever since NetEnt released it in 2011. Nevertheless, simply slapping a Megaways engine onto such an iconic slot wouldn’t cut the mustard and Red Tiger dug deep into their creative chests to include much of the old features and charm while also adding a few new twists that perfectly fit the storyline of the comical conquistador.
At the core of the gameplay is still the Avalanche mechanic Gonzo fans will know from the original, only that everything appears now supersized. A spin sequence starts with two to seven symbols avalanching on to each reel, creating anything from 64 to 117,649 ways to win. Land three to six matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right and you have a winner. All symbols in the combo will shatter while the remainder drops towards the bottom before new symbols cascade into the empty spaces. Score another winner and the process repeats until no new winning combination lands after an avalanche.
At the same time, a win multiplier increases progressively with each winning avalanche from the default x1 to x2, x3 and ultimately to x5. The display in the top right corner will show the active multiplier. It will reset to the default once a spin sequence concludes.
Unbreakable Wilds is a new name for sticky wilds that will persist until the end of a spin sequence. Two can land on any spin, one on any of the three front reels and the second on any of the last three reels. They will disappear before the next spin or free fall starts. They also substitute for scatters, making it easier to trigger or retrigger the bonus round.
Also newly added is a random Earthquake feature that can trigger on any spin in the base game and free falls feature. It will shake the entire screen and shatter all low-value symbols in view before they are replaced with high-paying symbols only.
Having three scatters or in combination with a wild on adjacent reels starting from the leftmost at the end of a spin sequence will trigger 9 Free Falls. Any additional scatter will award +3 free falls. For example, three scatters and one wild will get you 12 free falls. Before the start of the round, the game will present you with Gonzo’s giant Royal Wheel (at select casinos only) where you can collect or gamble for more free spins in multiple levels. Losing a gamble will see you end up with a reduced number of free spins as a consolation prize.
More free spins can be retriggered during the feature with the same combinations, no limits. Throughout the bonus round, the win multiplier starts at x3 and increases to x6, x9 and x15 on consecutive winning avalanches. It will stay a the maximum after the fourth win within the same spin and reset to x3 between free falls. Plus, the random Earthquake modifier and Unbreakable Wilds are included in the bonus round.
Final Verdict
It can’t get much more suspenseful for a slot reviewer than seeing for the first time how a game studio is delivering a sequel or as in this case, an upgrade to an iconic slot. There are so many things that can go wrong that could send the new arrival instantly to the ash heap of failed sequel attempts. But Red Tiger did well on this occasion, actually brilliantly well. Gonzo’s Quest Megaways is a worthy follow-up creation to the mighty original with ample new twists and a huge win potential to match.
