Review
Delve into Norse mythology on the slot from Red Tiger Gaming, created in collaboration with Cayetano Gaming. Sons Of Asgard will take you to the Halls of Valhalla where two mighty gods – Thor and Loki – will face each other in a reel clash with 1,024 to 32,768 ways to win, a random symbol shuffle and two free spins modes that can lead to wins of up to 2,000 times your bet.
Slot Details
Sons of Asgard is a video slot with five reels, four rows and 1,024 ways to win. The size can increase to a 5×8 format with up to 32,768 ways in one of the bonus features. Pays are awarded for three to five matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right only. You can mingle with the might Norse deities on desktop or mobile from 0.25 to 250 credits per spin. Some casino will offer with lower maximum bet limits. The game has medium to high volatility with a slightly below-average RTP of 95.33%.
The heavenly realm of the Norse gods is in the background of a semi-translucent game window. A floating platform where Thor and Loki will clash in the features is placed at the bottom with the helmets of the gods placed on each side. A harrowing, windy soundtrack give the entire reel spectacle an eerie feeling.
The pay symbols start at the low end with the card royals from J to A in Norse style, awarding 1x to 2x your stake for a single five of a kind. They are followed by a range of Nordic icons – a hunting horn, a rune-marked raven and a red-eyed wolf’s head. Hit five across the reels to win 3x to 10x your stake.
A Nordic golden axe is the wild symbol, substituting for all regular symbols. It is also the top payer with 20x your bet should five land on a spin. Thor and Loki icons are the scatters, appearing on reel three only.
Sons of Asgard Slot Features
The Norse gods have been the stalwart of developers ever since the first video slots emerged. The intense rivalry between the various gods is a gift that keeps giving as proven by the sheer number of such themed slots that can be found in casino lobbies today. Virtually every studio has at least one title in its portfolio, usually loaded with intense random and bonus features, usually accompanied by violent lightning strikes and thunderous clouds.
Red Tiger Gaming (or better said Cayetano Gaming) has not been stingy either and gave the game a random symbol shuffle and two types of free spin modes. Each is marked by the everlasting rivalry between the two powerful Norse gods.
Watch out after any losing spin as the two can randomly appear to trigger the Thor vs Loki Random Bonus. They will fight for reel supremacy and in the process shuffle the symbols in view until a win is achieved.
Landing the Thor scatter on reel three in the base game will trigger five Thor’s Thunder Free Spins, which can be indefinitely retriggered. Thor will appear on every free spin to add up to four random wilds to the reels. In turn, hitting a Loki scatter on reel three in the base game will trigger five Loki’s Malice Free Spins, which can also be retriggered without limits. On every free spin, Loki will wack the reels to expand them by one to four positions per spin, up the maximum of 5×8 format and 32,768 ways to win. Any expansion will be locked in for the duration of the feature.
That is not the end yet as the scatters can appear in the opposite feature. Thor landing during the Lokis’ Malice round will add up to four random wilds for the current spin while Loki landing on a Thor’s Thunder free spin will grant up to 20 reel expansions for the current spin only.
Final Verdict
Anyone releasing a Norse-themed slot has to measure up to Thunderstruck II from Microgaming, for us the benchmark ever since it was released in May 2010. The combination of random and four bonus features with mega win potential has yet to find an equal contender. Question is now whether Sons of Asgard is the holy grail to achieve just that. The answer is a very clear no as it lacks not just in win potential but also in potent graphics and animations as well as playability. On top, the wind-howling soundtrack made us mute the volume within a few minutes. I guess, we will not be travelling to Asgard on this slot.
