Bar-X Megaways is a video slot with six reels and up to 117,649 ways to win, using the patented game engine from Big Time Gaming. The number of ways from 324 to the maximum is randomly determined for every spin by selecting between two and seven pay symbols for reels one and six as well as two to six pay symbols for reels two to five. Additionally, the game has an extra reel at the top of the game window with four positions, extending from reel two to five, where more symbols appear on every spin. A display in the top left corner shows the total amount of active ways to win for the current spin.

A spin sequence starts with symbols cascading from the top on to the reels. Wins are then paid for two to six adjacent symbols from left to right. The symbols from a winning combination are part of a reaction which will see them explode to make room for new symbols to cascade into place. This will continue as long as a new winning combination occurs after a reaction. Wins are accumulated from all cascades and paid before the next spin sequence starts.

Storm GT went for a rather simple but sleek design using the trademarked Electrocoin, BarX and OXO symbols. A structured background with Bar-X signs is complemented by a geometrically balanced game window, with the overall appearance resembling Blueprint slots. Not surprising since one of the Storm GT founders is a former Blueprint executive.

Open the game to find O, X and black&white Bars at the low end of the paytable, awarding 1x to 4x your bet for a single five of a kind. The game is more or less an exact clone of Bonanza with just a free spins round as bonus feature, which BTG fans know packs quite a punch. Hitting four scatters anywhere on the main reels within one spin sequence will trigger 10 free spins. Any further scatter landing will award +5 free spins. During the feature, scatters appear in the horizontal reel only and will add five free spins for three scatters and 10 free spins for four, no limits. The main attraction though in the free spins is the unlimited multiplier. It will start at x1 and increase by x1 after every winning reaction.

Final Verdict

After bursting onto the Megaways stage earlier this year with their Magic Merlin Megaways release, Storm GT seems to have taken a breather and used the standard engine tools and features that will give you solid Megaways gaming action but that’s about it. I would venture to say that it could be used as an alternative to Bonanza, although having 2 free spins less in the bonus round might not be acceptable for everyone.
