Review
Travel to the Mongol steppe on the slot from Thunderkick. Sword of Khans will take you back to the middle ages when a Khan would lead his hordes on their nomadic raids of the Asian regions. Your bravery will be rewarded with wild substitutions and a free spins round with expanding symbols and progressive multipliers that can lead to wins of up 10,000 times your bet.
Slot Details
Sword of Khans is a video slot with five reels, three rows and 10 fixed pay lines. Wins are paid for two to five matching symbols on a line from left to right only. You can venture into the Mongol kingdom on desktop or mobile from 0.10 to 100 credits per spin. The game has very high volatility (9.4/10) with an RTP of 95.38%, which is substantially lower than on other Thunderkick games.
The title Khan came to prominence at the turn of the 12th century with the rise of the Mongol Empire under the reign of their influential leader known as Genghis Khan. He united many of the nomadic Mongol tribes to create an empire that by the time of his demise in 1227 would stretch across most of Central Asia and China. Fittingly, a mountainous scene at dusk with snowcapped peaks is in the background of the game window that is built into a tribal temple with the typical roof structure of the period.
The pay symbols start at the low end with the card royals from 10 through to A, awarding 10x to 15x your bet for a single five of a kind. They are complemented with typical parts of a warrior armour – shield, body armour and helmet – as well as the Khan himself at the high end. Hit five on a line to win 30x to 250x your stake.
The Khan’s sword carries a dual function as a wild and scatter, substituting for all pay symbols and also trigger the bonus feature when sufficient land on a spin. Five across the reels will also award 250x your bet.
Sword of Khans Slot Features
The base game delivers the usual high-volatility rollercoaster just like all other slots with expanding symbols as the action and win potential are primarily focussed on the Free Spins feature. You will need to hit three or more sword scatters to trigger it with a random number of free spins – 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 or 15. The game will also award 2x, 20x and 200x your bet for three, four and five scatters respectively. Only two scatters are needed for a retrigger with another random amount being awarded.
Before the round starts, one of the regular pay symbols will be randomly selected as the special expanding symbol. When sufficient land on a free spin, they will expand vertically to cover the entire reel and award wins for all pay lines, even when they are not adjacent. It will need minimum three low-paying symbols or minimum two premium symbols anywhere on the screen to see them expand and award a win, which is paid on top of any potential line wins.
Until now, it all reads like any other of the dozens of “Book of…” slots and wannabee clones that developers have graced us since Novomatic released with their original Book of Ra slot the first game with the expanding symbol mechanic. Stopping here would just add another title to the list without standing out from the crowd.
Thunderkick went a step further and included a twist of their own which separates Sword of Khans from all other similar games. The not so subtle difference kicks off with a retrigger of the free spins round. In addition to awarding a random number of extra free spins, the game will again randomly select a pay symbol to turn into an expanding symbol. And here comes the special twist. Should the selected symbol be already an active expanding symbol, then the game will apply a win multiplier to that symbol. With multiple triggers, it can go from x1 up to a maximum of x3 for each selected symbol. A display at the bottom of the game window will show the current active expanding symbols as well as any potential multipliers.
Final Verdict
Well, we thought we seen it all when it comes to “Book of” slots and lookalikes but Thunderkick has proven us to be wrong. The game mechanic keeps on giving as the central feature with the expanding symbol is garnished with extras that will separate a creation from the rest of the pack. Impressively, Sword of Khans also wields a maximum win potential that is capped at 10,000x your bet instead of the usual 5,000x we have seen on most other such games. We can see this slot becoming a serious contender to player favourites such as Book of Dead, Rise of Merlin or Book of Ra Deluxe.
