Core to the gameplay is still the cascading reels mechanic with reactive wins although it works slightly different on this slot as you will soon discover. At the start of a spin sequence, the curtain on each of the six main reels will move to cover a random part, leaving room for anything from 2 to 10 symbols for reel one and six as well as 2 to 9 symbols for the four middle reels, although it will never be more than half of a reel. Together with the four symbols appearing on the extra row at the bottom, it will lead to a random number of ways from 324 all the way to 1 million, creating virtually unlimited combinations of symbols and rows. Hitting a winner will have the symbols from the combination start a chain reaction called reactive wins. They will explode to make space for new symbols to drop into place, potentially leading to multiple winners within a spin sequence. This is the moment where the curtains come into play. For every reaction, the curtain is removed from one symbol on a random reel, further increasing the number of active ways to win. The process is repeated as long as a new winning combination occurs after a cascade. Wins are accumulated from all cascades and paid before the next spin sequence starts.

Having four or more amphitheatre scatters in view at the end of the spin sequence will trigger the Free Spins feature. The game leads to a new screen with two horizontal Feature Wheels. The bottom wheel awards a number of free spins – 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 or 16 while the top shows a number of curtain configurations. They will spin once to reveal your feature components.

This would be the moment where you cross your fingers as you are about to find out. The curtain configuration will be fixed for the duration of the feature, basically giving you a fixed layout although the number of ways to win can still vary depending on the size of the symbols. That is unless you land a Spartacus Wild anywhere on reels two to five including the covered part as it will expand to full reel height on each occasion.

However, in typical Megaways style, the bonus round comes with the unlimited win multiplier. It will start at x1 and increase by x1 after every winning reaction, no limits. Plus, land three or more scatters within a spin sequence to retrigger the same number of free spins as initially awarded from the Feature Wheel, again, no limits. Although, any bonus round will instantly end once you hit the total win cap of 250,000 credits.

Final Verdict

While we can lament about WMS’ laziness with regards to the graphics, we have to give them credit for trying something out of the ordinary that makes Spartacus Megaways unique in the rapidly growing genre. It might be though not to everyone’s liking especially the fixed curtain configuration in the free spins as it defeats the purpose of the dynamic reels. Nevertheless, the game is entertaining enough for players to become a reel gladiator for a slotting session.
