Review
Get ready for a retro gaming experience with a twist on the fruit slot from Northern Lights Gaming, powered by Yggdrasil’s YGS Masters platform. All Star Knockout is taking you down memory lane when fruit machines were the main attraction for gamblers. The UK-based partner studio added random Win Spins, an Award Board collector and a star-triggered bonus round with symbols knocked off the reel strips for wins of up to 4,500 times your bet.
Slot Details
All Star Knockout is a video slot with five reels, four rows and 20 fixed pay lines. Wins are paid for three to five matching symbols on a line from left to right only. Available on desktop and mobile, you can knock the reels out with bets from 0.20 to a huge 400 credits per spin. The game has low to medium volatility with an RTP of 96.09%.
Traditionally, fruit machines have never been a feast for the eyes when it comes to the visuals. This creation slots well into the genre with a simple star-studded background in blue colours and a simple game window that is dominated by fruits and 7s. At the bottom, you will see the display for the first twist that supposedly brings the game into the 21st century. Called the Award Board, it will collect stars to trigger the main feature. The audio is most certainly not from this century, instead, you get to listen to a funky 70s track interrupted by a rather annoying voice announcing any type of action that is bound to go down on the reels next.
The pay symbols start at the low end with lemons, plums, oranges and cherries, awarding 1x to 1.5x your bet for a single five of a kind. They are followed by lucky 7s in blue, white and red colours as well as the slot logo. Hit five on a line to win 2x to 5x your stake, which is rather mediocre. While the game lacks wilds that would substitute and assist in creating winning combos, it does come with some sort of collectable scatter represented by, well, a star.
All Star Knockout Slot Features
Many have tried to revive or maybe keep alive the good old fruit machines, many have failed to leave a memorable impression on today’s casino community, many have disappeared quickly into the abyss of dust-collecting games, leaving only a select few that indeed enriched the gameplay in such style that it attracts millennials. A first look at All Star Knockout would normally send it straight into the abyss but there is more than meets the eye to it. Reason enough to take a closer look whether it will stand a chance to be seen by the feature-spoiled crowd of casino players.
The slot relies on two main features that just might give it the edge over other failed titles. The first is the Win Spin Respin feature which can trigger randomly after a losing spin. The first respin is guaranteed to deliver a win, awarding repeatedly another respin as long as you hit a winner on each respin. In other words, you’ll spin until you lose.
While enjoying the sights of fruits and colourful lucky 7s, keep an eye on the Award Board at the bottom of the reels. All eigh pay symbols are listed, each with five stars next to it. The aim is to light up all stars for a symbol by landing stars on a spin. It will be randomly added to one of the eight collectors. To get you going when loading the game, you will receive 12 randomly distributed stars before the first spin. The feature is bet sensitive, meaning that the 12 stars are added for each bet size while any collected stars will temporarily disappear when you change your stake. They will be restored when you return to the same bet size.
Collecting all stars for one or more symbols will trigger the All Star Knockout Bonus with 5 Free Spins, which cannot be retriggered as such but filling up another collection meter will get you +2 free spins for each completed symbol. The triggering symbols as well as those activated in the feature will be removed from the reel strips for the duration of the bonus round, leaving you with fewer symbols for more chances to hit a winner. Naturally, you would want to have the low-value symbols removed. The maximum you can knock out in a round is 7 symbols.
And there is another twist. Before the round starts, you will be granted a random multiplier that will apply to all wins throughout the feature. The possible multipliers are x2, x3, x4 or x5. Once the round concludes, all completed star meters are reset while the others are carried back to the base game. The Low Star Bonus is triggered should you be left with less than 4 stars on the board. It will get you one bonus spin with more stars added to the reels for a chance to fill up your meters again.
Lastly, a Gamble button is added to the left of the screen in those jurisdictions where feature buys are not restricted. Hitting the button will lead to a second screen with a pie gamble wheel divided into green and red areas. The proportions, as well as the cost for the gamble, are based on how many stars you have collected up to that point. You get one spin to either land on green and enter the All Star Knockout Bonus round or on red to lose the gamble and your bet.
Final Verdict
Not sure how to rate this slot creation. I am generally not fond of fruit machines, let alone with rather mediocre attempts to make them palatable to the younger casino audience, or to anyone for that matter. In my opinion, All Start Knockout belongs to the category as there is little that would want me to try it for real money after a few hours playing in fun mode for the review. The variance is terribly low that a loss of maybe 100 times your bet seems an insurmountable task to recover from.
But if you are in the fruit machines, then I guess you will want to give it a few spins. Just don’t expect to come anywhere near the purported max win potential of 4,500x your bet as a full screen of the top symbol comes in at 100x bet in the base game and possibly 500x in the free spins. How that adds up to that rather high number is a mystery to me.
