Review
Pack your sunglasses and flip-flops as you are about to travel to a faraway island on the slot from Elk Studios. Tropicool is taking you to a sandy beach covered in snow after a freak storm. The exotic party across six frozen reels goes down with an additional horizontal feature reel, avalanching symbols, reactive wins, wild substitutions and a free spins round with unlimited multipliers that can lead to wins of up to 10,000 times your bet.
Slot Details
Tropicool is a cascading video slot with six reels, six rows and 46,656 ways to win. Pays are awarded for three to five matching symbols landing on adjacent reels from left to right only. Additionally, the two character symbols pay scattered. You can travel to the exotic island on desktop, tablet or mobile from 0.20 to 100 credits per spin. The game has medium to high volatility (7/10) with a below-average RTP of 95% and a hit rate of roughly 1:4 spins.
The visuals are anyone’s dream holiday view of a sandy beach on a tropical island, a place where you can relax and enjoy some cool cocktails while a gentle sea breeze is wading through your hair. However, on arrival, you will find it all covered in snow after a freak storm passed through. Never mind though as a leisurely acoustic soundtrack will get you right back into the holiday mood.
The pay symbols start at the low end with fruits held in ice cubes – plums in blue, green, yellow and red colours – awarding across the board 0.3x your bet for a single six of a kind. They are followed by apples, coconuts and strawberries. Hit six across the reels to win 0.6x to 2x your stake.
The game has two 3-symbol high characters – a pink flamingo lady and a toucan gentleman – paying when landing on adjacent reels as well as scattered (more to that shortly). Six from left to right will yield 0.9x and 1.2x your bet respectively.
The game has whole range of special symbols, starting with a variety of icons marked with ‘W’ as wilds. The standard wild substitutes for all regular pay symbols expect Wild feature symbols, Bonus scatters and Row Swap symbols. Lastly, an icon marked with ‘B’ acts as the scatter.
Tropicool Slot Features
Elk Studios is taking us after the nitro-fueled reel mayhem on Nitropolis 2 to an exotic island for some well-deserved reprieve and fruity cocktails, although the snowy atmosphere might give you the chills. Plus, Tropicool might feel like a leisurely reel party but, beware, it is still a rather volatile slot albeit with plenty of modifiers and features that will make this an entertaining evening on the icy beach.
The reel party goes down on a fixed 6×6 reel set with 46,656 ways to win active at all times. At the start of a spin sequence, symbols avalanche from the top onto the reels while the horizontal Feature Reel spins special icons into view which will trigger a specific modifier if they fall onto the grid during the same game round. Any winning combo shatters and disappears while the remainder falls towards the bottom.
Landing three or more character symbols in full view will award a scattered pay when they are not part of a winning combination. They need to be fully stacked on the reels but not necessarily on adjacent reels. Any other potential wins are paid as well and the spin sequence continues as normal.
Any feature and blank icons above reels with empty spaces will now drop down before new pay symbols fill in the remaining positions. The process is repeated as long as more winning combinations land. Feature icons will activate their modifier should they be part of a winning combo or after no more wins occur. Here’s what can appear on the Feature Reel and what they will get you should they drop into the play area:
- Blank icon: Falls down and shatters instantly. Symbols then avalanche into the empty space/s
- Standard Wild: Same as the normal wild
- Locked Wild: Marked with a lock and 3. Will stay on screen until it has been three times part of a winning combo or the end of a spin sequence. The counter on the lock is reduced by 1 after a win.
- Multiplier Wild: Will have a random multiplier from x2 to x5 attached. More than one in a combo will see only the highest multiplier being used.
- Row Swap: Stays on screen until no more win occur. One symbol in the same row is then chosen and all others on the same row are then transformed into the same symbol except scatters or wilds.
A spin sequence continues after a modifier has been used as long as more wins occur on the next avalanche. All wins from a spin are accumulated and paid once a game round ends.
Having three, four, five or six scatters in view by the time a game round concludes will trigger 10, 15, 20 and 25 Free Drops respectively. Two new icons are added to the Feature Reel for the duration of the feature.
- Extra Drops: Awards 1, 2 or 5 additional free drops
- Win Multiplier: Adds x1, x2, x3 or x5 to the current win multiplier.
The win multiplier will not reset until the end of the bonus round and instead will grow every time a Win Multiplier icon is activated from the Feature Reel, no limits. Plus, any unused icons will stay on the Feature Reel between drops. Similarly, Locked Wilds already on the reels will stay in position between free spins if not fully used. The round ends when you run out of free drops or hit the max win cap of 10,000 times your bet.
The X-iter feature returns with five options to instantly crank up the heat on the reels (restricted in some countries). The prices range from 5x your bet for a spin with a guaranteed win to a massive 500x for the Super Bonus that start with an x10 win multiplier. As usual, we recommend some caution in using Bonus Buys as it can quickly diminish your playing balance on a rainy day.
Final Verdict
Tropicool feels indeed like a holiday getaway after the release of Nitropolis 2. Instead of explosive action, we get a soothing gaming experience with gentle tones as well as colourful fruit symbols and characters. The gameplay flows well although quite volatile at times since much of the win potential is locked in the extras on the Feature Reel. So beware, the sea can get rough on a tropical island too.
