Review
Earn the grace of the gods to strike a golden tide of untold riches on the slot developed by Triple Edge Studios and powered by Microgaming. Ascend the clouded realms of the mythical Mount Olympus, according to Greek mythology the home of mighty Zeus and his gods, for an encounter with Wild substitutions, Rolling Reels, Multiplier Trails and a free spins round for wins of up 1,400x your bet in a single spin.
Slot Details
Ancient Fortunes: Zeus is a video slot with five reels, three tows and 10 fixed pay lines. Wins are awarded both ways for three to five symbols from left to right and right to left. You can encounter the mighty gods on desktop, mobile and tablet from 0.10 to 70 credits per spin. The medium variance game comes with an RTP of 96.02%.
The visual part of the Ancient Fortunes: Zeus slot meets the high standards of today’s game design, not something that is evident when looking at some of the latest releases from Microgaming. With a heavenly scene of Mount Olympus in the background, the game window is held in stone columns and flanked by ancient walls. Occasional lightning and thundering are creating an air of suspense which turns out to be badly needed as you will find out when continuing to read this review. The main audio is nothing out of the ordinary.
Greek mythology dominates among the pay symbols, which are dropping as stone slabs with a distinct thumb sound on to the reels. What might sound interesting to watch, actually makes the gameplay look rather choppy and unnecessarily extends a spin sequence. At the low end, you will find snakes, panthers, krakens and vultures, paying 2.5x to 5x your stake for a five of a kind. They are followed by four Greek gods – the god of wine Dionysus, the god of the sea and earthquakes Poseidon, the god of trade, travellers and merchants Hermes and the god of war Ares. Line up five across the reels to win 7.5x to 62.5x your stake.
Zeus himself is the wild symbol, substituting for all symbols including scatters. Those are Zeus’ lightning bolt with minimum three needed on a pay line to trigger the free spins.
Rolling Reels and Multiplier Trail Explained
Anyone who played Jungle Jim: El Dorado from Microgaming or the mother of all rolling reel slots, Gonzo’s Quest from NetEnt, will know how the mechanic works. Symbols drop from the top onto the reels and any winning combination will be exploding after the payout to make room for new symbols to fall into place. The spin sequence continues until no new wins occur after a drop. And remember, wins are paid both ways, which should increase the potential to score consecutive wins.
Additionally, a multiplier trail will activate after the first win, increasing in the base game to x3, x5, and x7 for the second, third, fourth winning drop. Anything after will be multiplied by x7 and will reset to x1 at the end of a spin sequence. It will have higher multipliers in the free spins round.
The Ancient Fortunes: Zeus Free Spins Feature
Three, four or five lightning bolt scatters on a pay line at the end of a spin sequence will trigger 10, 15 and 20 free spins respectively, which can be retriggered up to a total of 70 free spins. During the feature, the starting multiplier is set at x3 and consecutive wins within on free spin sequence will increase that to x7, x11 and x21. It will also reset to the default x3 at the end of a free spin.
Final Verdict
Whilst lately any new announcement from Microgaming won’t have us biting our nails out of sheer suspense, we do give their creations a fair shake if not for anything else but nostalgic reasons as they might just produce another blockbuster game. Well, it won’t be Ancient Fortunes: Zeus. Although it has some win potential and good graphics, it plays so choppy that you will feel inclined to close the slot after just a few spins. Here’s hoping that the next Microgaming slot will be something spectacular.
