Review
Dive into a mysterious world of underwater beauty and progressive jackpots on the slot from Neon Valley Studios, powered by Microgaming. Atlantean Treasures: Mega Moolah is the latest addition to the gaming giant’s most popular jackpot network that has far exceeded one billion in payouts since the original Mega Moolah slot was released in 2006. That sounds like an eternity in online gaming and is proof for the attraction such games retain even after more than a decade. On this creation, you will be journeying to Atlantis in a quest to win one of the four progressive jackpots where a mermaid will welcome you as an expanding wild that will trigger respins and can lead to wins in excess of 500 times your bet on every spin in the main game.
Slot Details
Atlantean Treasures: Mega Moolah is a video slot with five reels, three rows and 10 fixed lines, paying both ways from left to right and from right to left. Available on desktop or mobile, you can bet from 0.10 to 200 credits per spin. The medium variance game comes with an RTP of 92.08%, which is low for normal standards but not unusual for progressive slots.
Get your diving gear ready as you are about to descend into deep waters when you load the game. A slightly blurry scene from the much fabled yet never found sunken city of Atlantis is in the background of a translucent game window with the pay symbols held in air bubbles. The four displays for the progressive jackpots are naturally the main attraction on the game, although the beautiful mermaid appearing as expanding wild should provide some extra eye candy. Keep an eye on the golden clam placed below the jackpot displays as it will light up when it is about to trigger the jackpot wheel. A deepwater soundtrack with air bubble noises provides the acoustic part.
The pay symbols are a mixture of water life and traditional icons. They can all appear stacked and start at the low end with a range of aquatic creatures – starfish, an anemone, a seahorse, a purple coloured fish and a pink coloured fish, awarding 2.5x to 6x your bet for a single five of a kind. The premium symbols are as blue 7s and BAR, paying 12x and 25x your stake respectively when you hit five on a line. A beautiful mermaid is the expanding wild, appearing on the centre reels only and substituting for all symbols. There are no scatters on this slot but small pearls can appear attached to the standard symbols that will be collected.
Atlantean Treasures: Mega Moolah Slot Features
Dozens of millionaires scooping up jackpots in the millions are the legacy of the Mega Moolah series that started in late 2006 when Microgaming released the original game into the casino lobbies. The biggest win exceeding £13,000,000 and is to this day the largest online jackpot as certified as the Guinness World Record. It has been close to a decade since Microgaming added a slot to the network, a task they delegated in 2019 to partner studio Neon Valley Studios. The result is a copy of their initial release on Microgaming’s Quickfire platform called Aurora Wilds whereas they exchanged the four fixed jackpots with the Mega Moolah progressives.
The standard gameplay does not differ and is centred on the Expanding Mermaid Wilds and Respin feature, that triggers when you land a mermaid wild anywhere on reel two, three or four. The mermaid will rise to full reel height and lock in place for a free respin. Hit another one on the respin and it will turn into an expanded sticky wild as well and award another respin. The maximum you can have are three respins. The feature ends when no new wild lands on a respin. Wins are evaluated and paid after each respin.
Understandably, the main attraction are the four progressive jackpots which can be won from the Jackpot Wheel – Mini, Minor, Major and Mega. Small pearls can appear attached to the pay symbols on the three centre reels and will be collected in the golden clam next to the game window. While it indicates that it will be the path to trigger the jackpot wheel, it is actually a random event, so don’t start counting the pearls. In fact, your bet size plays a significant role as the chance to win a jackpot is directly relative to the amount you stake. Keep an eye though on the clam as it will light up when it is about to trigger the jackpot wheel.
The game will lead to a separate screen, displaying the four jackpots – Mini, Minor, Major Mega as well as the coveted wheel with 20 segments. Similar to the other slots in the Mega Moolah series, you will get one spin on the wheel with a guaranteed win of one of four the jackpots. The size and number of segments are not a true indication for your chance to win any of the jackpots, that decision is made by a Random Number Generator. The jackpots have the following seed values:
- Mini: £10
- Minor: £100
- Major: £10,000
- Mega: £1,000,000
The value displayed is the amount you will win in your currency. Worth noting is that the base currency is the British Pound, hence, a player winning a jackpot in US dollars will see win the amount displayed but only the converted value to GBP will be deducted from the balance, thus the jackpots will not always reset to their exact seed values.
A fixed percentage of all bets made across the Microgaming network will contribute to the jackpots. While the lower three will be instantly credited, the main jackpot will go through a confirmation process to ensure that it indeed triggered.
Final Verdict
Atlantean Treasures: Mega Moolah feels like a lazy attempt at dusting up the Mega Moolah portfolio. Microgaming basically asked their partner Neon Valley Studios to take an existing game, Aurora Wilds in this case, and exchange the fixed jackpots with the Mega Moolah progressives. Plus, a little work on the graphics, instead of journeying to the North to watch the aurora borealis we descend to Atlantis, and voila, we have a new progressive jackpot slot. Positive to note is the increase in RTP, which on the original was merely 88% while on this creation we get a value of 92.08%. Still low, but then these type of games are all about the jackpots. The slot will be released on 25th February 2020.
