Travel back to the future on the slot from Triple Edge Studios, powered by Microgaming. Immersed in glaring neon colours, Attack On Retro is taking you to a metropolis in a distant future where the two street heroes, Jesse and Billy, are blaring their latest tunes from ghettoblasters while fighting off notorious robots. Hyperspins Respins, random robot wilds and a free spins round with three different modes can lead to wins of up to 1,000 times your bet.

Slot Details

Attack on Retro is a video slot with five reels, three rows and 10 fixed pay lines. Wins are awarded for three to five matching symbols on a line from left to right only. Your journey back to the future on desktop or mobile starts at 0.10 credits and peaks at 100 credits per spin. The game has medium volatility with a default RTP of 95.58%. Using the Hyperspins feature frequently will increase it to 96.08%.

Retro-style card royals from J through to A in different neon colours are at the low end of the paytable, awarding a mediocre 2x to 3x your bet for a single five of a king. The premiums are a robotic arm, a ghettoblaster, a keytar synthesizer and a futuristic hoverboard. Hit five on a line to win 6x to 20x your stake which is still nothing to shout about.

The two protagonists, Jesse and Billy, are the wild symbols, appearing in 1×1, 1×2 and 1×3 sizes and substituting for all regular pay symbols except for each other and scatters. The latter is a simple ‘Free Spins’ icon. Hitting five matching wilds on a line will yield 100x your bet while a mixed combo of the two wilds will get you 50x your stake.

Attack On Retro Slot Features

Anyone aged 40 or older will most probably remember the days when all was neon and music would blare from ghettoblasters. Millennials might not have encountered the phenomena that lasted through the 80s but will have now the chance to get a retro-experience on a set of slot reels thanks to the folks at Triple Edge Studios. After releasing Book of Oz Lock ‘N Spin in 2019, they bring back the familiar mechanic where you can respin single reels in the hope of a better outcome.

An integral part of the gameplay falls to the Hyperspins mechanic. After every spin, the game will offer you to respin any of the five reels as many times as you like with the aim to hit either a missing scatter or symbol to create or improve a winning combo. Obviously, the respins are not free and will come with an increasing cost the higher the win potential is should the missing symbol land on the respin. Any new wins occurring after a respin are paid. Changing bet sizes will remove the respin options.

The Random Wilds feature can trigger on any spin in the base game and free spins. Watch out for the screen turning red and the two robots hanging on the side frame of the reels to jump onto the screen and multiply. Up to 15 can be added in the base game and up to 3 during the bonus feature. A laser cannon will shoot at the reels and turn all hit robots into wilds before the reels come to a stop.

Hitting three scatters on reels two, three and four will trigger the Free Spins feature. The game will lead to a second screen showing you three options – 2 free spins at x5, 5 free spins at x2 and 10 free spins at x1. You can pick any on each occasion. Landing two or three scatters during the feature will add +5 and +10 free spins at the same multiplier respectively, no limits.

Reels one and five will be wild throughout the bonus round with a random selection on every free spin whether it is Billy or Jessie on either or both reels, substantially increasing your chances to score a win. The maximum you can hit in a single spin is 5,000 times your bet for a full screen of either Billy or Jesse wilds with the x5 multiplier.

Final Verdict

Well,  Attack On Retro is not a total failure but neither will it be the holy grail of future slotting. It has familiar mechanics and features that work somewhat well together and provide a just about acceptable level of entertainment, however, the 1,000 times bet win potential is not something that will have people lining up to board the journey back to the neon age.
