Slot Details
Jurassic Park Gold Link&Win is a video slot with five reels, four rows and 40 fixed pay lines. Wins are awarded for three to five matching symbols landing on a line from left to right only. You can face the mighty T-Rex on desktop, tablet or mobile from 0.20 to 30 credits per spin. The game has high volatility with a default RTP of 96.00%. Beware, lower RTP settings at 94.xx% or 92.xx% are offered. Check the help files to find out which version you will be playing.
The visuals have not changed much since the release of the original in 2014. A dense jungle scene serves as the backdrop while five characters from the cast together with a range of dinosaurs populate the reels. New are various displays for the collection meter, Link&Win feature as well as the fixed jackpots. The sounds are rather unspectacular with constant thumps from the various scatters and bonus symbols that land virtually on every spin. The main audio is a symphonic orchestra piece that turns more epic in the free spins.
The pay symbols are virtually unchanged from the original, starting at the low end with five dinosaurs: T-Rex, Velociraptor, Brachiosaurus, Triceratops and Dilophosaurus. A single five of a kind will pay 1x to 2x your bet. They are followed by five characters from the movie – John Hammond, Dr Sarah Harding, Ian Malcolm, Ellie Sattler and Alan Grant. Hit five on a line to win 4x to 10x your stake.
The movie logo is the wild, appearing single or double-stacked and substituting for all regular pay symbols while also yielding a respectable 125x your bet for five. Whenever it is part of a winning combination in the base game, it will multiply the payout by x2 or x5. Blue and golden orbs are the bonus symbol while the famous amber-preserved mosquito acts as the scatter. The latter will award a coin win of 1x, 15x and 150x your stake for 3, 4 and 5 respectively.
Jurassic Park: Gold Slot Features
Jurassic Park: Gold follows in the footsteps of Thunderstruck Wild Lightning and presents a familiar picture for all those who have known Microgaming for some time. They were or, for some, still are the masters in taking one successful concept and churning out a number of similar games that differ ever so slightly to stand on their own. Cue in their series of 243-ways games that started in 2010 and included Thunderstuck II, Immortal Romance, the original Jurassic Park and more.
On this occasion, the task of getting the job done fell to Stormcraft Studios, a long time partner in the Microgaming program. Just like with Thunderstruck Wild Lightning, they changed the format to a 5×4 grid with 40 fixed pay lines. Nothing unusual but considering that the 243-ways engine was a signature development from Microgaming, it feels odd that they did not stick to the tried-and-tested formula. Never change a winning team and all. Well, time to take a closer look.
One of the core features is still a variety of Free Spin modes that can be unlocked via a number of triggers. Landing three, four or five scatters will trigger the Free Spins Selector, leading to a new screen with the available options. Jurassic Park purists will be somewhat disappointed to find out that the bonus features are virtually identical.
Three of the four modes share one mechanic – any wild that is part of a winning combo will multiply the payout with a random factor of x2, x5 or x8. They differ though in how the additional Wild Chase modifier is applied during the feature (more to that shortly). All three can be retriggered indefinitely by landing again 3, 4 or 5 scatters. The fourth feature has max volatility and is unlocked by a collection meter in the base game. You can pick any of the features that are unlocked. Here’s a list in ascending order of volatility.
- Diloposaurus Free Spins – available as default: Awards 12 Free Spins with the Wild Chase modifier on reel three. Max win is 3,600x bet.
- Velociraptor Free Spins – unlocked after four triggers: Awards 9 Free Spins with the Wild Chase modifier on reels two and four. Max win is 3,650x bet.
- Spinosaurus Free Spins – unlocked after four triggers: Awards 6 Free Spins with the Wild Chase modifier on reels two, three and four. Max win is 4,000x.
- Tyrannosaurus Rex Free Spin – available when collection meter is filled: Awards 1 Free Spin with a guaranteed T-Rex Wildstorm feature (see below). Max win is 5,000x bet for a full screen of wilds.
Similar to the Wild Lightning feature on the Thunderstruck sequel, the Wild Chase modifier can have a significant impact on the winnings from a Free Spins round. A rather convoluted mechanic that will lead to expanding wilds. Disappointingly, they are not sticky, which would have added a layer of suspense to the features.
The Wild Chase reels are marked according to the Free Spin mode selection and any wild landing on the respective reels will leave a marked position in its wake. Any time a wild lands in an activated position, it will expand to full reel height for that particular free spin. As mentioned, they are not sticky and you will need to hit them again for an expanded wild that will potentially lead to multi-line wins. A full reel of activated positions will retrigger +4 spins.
Let’s return to the Tyrannosaurus Rex Free Spin. It will become available in the Free Spins Selector on a feature trigger if you have collected 15 scatter pairs during the base game. Keep an eye on the small display to the left (desktop) to see the progress.
The T-Rex Free Spin is indeed just a single spin but with a guaranteed Wildstorm trigger. One to five reels can turn into stacked wilds, with a full screen awarding a roaring 5,000 times your bet. There is one consolation should the feature end with no win as the collection meter will be refilled, ready to be unleashed again on your next trigger.
Lastly, landing six or more Powerball bonus symbols on a spin in the base game will trigger the Link&Win Bonus Game with four fixed jackpots – Mini at 15x, Minor at 30x, Major at 100x and Mega at 8,000x bet. The game will lead to a new grid with eight rows and all triggering Powerball symbols locked in place. Each is marked with a random coin win, usually between 1x and 5x your bet, or any of the three smaller jackpots.
Initially, three spins are awarded to potentially land more Powerball symbols or any of the smaller jackpots. Any appearing will turn sticky as well and the counter is reset to three. Landing sufficient Powerball symbols will gradually unlock the extra rows.
- Row 5: Unlocked by a total of 15 sticky Powerball symbols; includes minimum 6 from the feature trigger.
- Row 6: Unlocked by a total of 20 sticky Powerball symbols
- Row 7: Unlocked by a total of 25 sticky Powerball symbols
- Row 8: Unlocked by a total of 30 sticky Powerball symbols
The bonus game continues until you either fill the entire screen with Powerball symbols or run out of spins, with the latter being obviously the norm. All coin wins and smaller jackpots in view will be added and paid in one amount. Getting indeed a full screen of Powerball symbols will award the Mega Jackpot at 8,000 times your bet. Once concluded, the game will lead back to the default reel set.
Final Verdict
Anyone who knows Microgaming and its history won’t be surprised by the striking similarities between Jurassic Park: Gold and Thunderstruck Wild Lightning. The main differences are the visuals, sounds and the lower win potential which has been nearly halved. Unimpressive to say the least, although the fans of the blockbuster movie will most probably not mind.
