Review
Get ready to blast into outer space on the intergalactic slot from Electric Elephant powered by Microgaming. After some mediocre and actually atrocious releases, here we are hoping yet again that Microgaming will return to the days when they were a leading game provider. Especially since the Space Spins slot is the first of its kind from the newly-signed partner studio Electric Elephant. After pummeling around for years under the name of Seven Deuce Gaming, a name we rarely came across in the last 20 years, they themselves went through a rebranding exercise in 2018.
New company name, new partner studio, new game – did it pay off or shall we ready us for another disappointing release from Microgaming? We could reveal our verdict at this stage but will let you read the review to make up your own mind.
Slot Details
Space Spins is a video slot with five reels, five rows and 40 fixed paylines. How nice! More rows and fewer paylines. If you ever want to blast into space with some funny cartoon characters, then you can do it on desktop, mobile or tablet from 0.20 to 100 credits per spin. The RTP of this medium variance game is set at 95.11%, well below the industry average. Which means you will get less bang for your buck.
Graphics and Visuals
A crater scene from a distant planet is the backdrop to a simplistic game window that should be a square but has been stretched to trick our eyes and conceal that the slot has only 40 pay lines over five rows. A flying saucer with a one-eyed cartoon alien hovers on the left of the reels, ready for taking off when you hit it big. An eerie soundtrack is trying desperately to create an air of suspense.
Pay Symbols
All regular pay symbols can appear fully stacked on Space Spins. At the low end, you will find the rather mundane card royals from J to A, paying a glorious 1x to 1.25x your bet for a single five of a kind. Hit a full screen and you will be blessed with a win of 40x or 50x your stake. It continues with a flying saucer, a planet as well as a green and a blue one-eye alien and an astronaut. Pays for a 5OAK rise slightly and range now from 1.5x to 5x your bet.
The wild appears in four shapes and is also the top-paying symbols with a colossal 7.5x your stake when five land on a line. Although that can only happen when one of the expanding wilds appears since the standard wild is available on reels two to four only. The scatters are an icon with the words “free spins”.
Multiple Wilds for Bigger Wins
Get ready for one of the highlights on the slot. Three types of wilds can land on any spin on reels two, three and four in the base game and free spins, which will expand in different ways and patterns. A standard wild landing on a spin can turn randomly into one of the expanding wilds.
- Orange Wild: will expand vertically from the bottom to the top
- Green Wild: will expand horizontally from left to right
- Blue Wild: will turn all adjacent symbols into wilds
The Free Spins Feature
Hit scatters on reels one, three and five to trigger 8 free spins which cannot be retriggered. During the feature, any wild landing will stay sticky on the reels until the end of the bonus round. Not that it will make a massive difference as the maximum win in a single spin is an atrociously low 300x bet and that is for all 40 pay lines.
Our Verdict
You might have figured out by now what our verdict will be. Space Spins is in every aspect a poorly designed slot. Starting from the strange 5×5 format with just 40 paylines to the mediocre win potential, there is simply nothing that would want us to play this game for real money.
