Review
Valuable rubies and precious diamonds are waiting to be split on the slot from Play’n GO. Prism of Gems is the next addition to the series with dynamic reels and a variable number of payways. On this occasion, you will get to split symbols on the main reels, creating up to 3,087 payways and increasing multipliers of up to x7. Enter the free spins and you could walk away with a gemtastic win of up to 30,000 times your bet.
Slot Details
Prism of Gems is a cascading video slot in a 5×3 format with an extra horizontal tracker at the top, stretching between reel two and four. Together, they create a 3-4-4-4-3 reel set with 576 payways to win as default. The symbols in the top tracker can split matching symbols below on the same reel, increasing the game window to a maximum 3-7-7-7-3 format with then 3,087 payways (more to that shortly). Pays are awarded for three to five matching symbols landing on adjacent reels from left to right only.
You can spin the shiny reels on desktop, mobile or tablet from 0.20 to 100 credits per spin. The game has high volatility (9/10) with a default RTP of 96.24%. Beware, some operators might offer it with secondary RTP settings of 94.25% or even as low as 91.24%. Make sure to check the help file for the exact value.
The pay symbols start at the low end with card royals from 9 through to A, awarding 0.4x to 0.7x your stake for a single five of a kind. They are followed by a range of gems in different shapes and sizes – purple, green, orange and blue. Hit five across the reels to win 1.4x to 3x your bet.
A shiny diamond is the wild symbol, appearing on the horizontal tracked and substituting for all regular symbols. Lastly, a stained glass icon acts as the scatter.
Prism of Gems Slot Features
While not hugely successful, Play’n GO is continuing to add to their Gems series of slots with dynamic reels. Neither Perfect Gems nor Frozen Gems have had an overly large impact in the casino community but are nonetheless rather enjoyable slots with respectable win potential. Will the third time be a charm? Time to take a closer look.
The horizontal tracker on top of the three centre reels, called Multiplier Reel, and the cascading symbol mechanic are again the focal point in the gameplay as they have the potential to split symbols, multiply wins of up to x343 and create a chain of winning cascades. The mechanic is rather simple but quite effective when you are lucky enough to have a few cascades within the same spin.
Every game round starts with symbols dropping from the top onto the main reels and the horizontal tracker on top of the centre reels bringing three additional symbols into view from the right. Score a win and the combo gets removed and the remainder drops towards the bottom before new symbols tumble into the empty spaces. The process is repeated as long as new wins occur after a cascade.
Let’s check out the modifiers and extras next. Each position in the horizontal Multiplier Reel has, well, a multiplier attached. It starts at x1 and increases by x1 every time the main reel below cascades, up to a maximum of x7. Taken together for all three symbols positions in the tracker, it provides the potential for multipliers of up to x343. Only wins that contain symbols on the Multiplier Reel will benefit from the multipliers. In the base game, all multipliers reset between spins.
The second modifier is the symbol split mechanic. Any matching symbols landing on the Multiplier Reel and the main reel below will see the symbols on the main reel split into two, thus increasing the number of payways. Hitting a wild in the top reel will split all three symbols on the main reel below into two except scatters. Any unused split symbols will stay on the screen until the end of a game round. The maximum is 7 symbols per main reel, creating up to 3,087 payways.
Having three, four or five scatters in view by the time a game round concludes will trigger 10, 15 and 20 Free Spins respectively. During the feature, any scatter landing will add +2 spin, no limits. Plus any multipliers from the triggering spin will be transferred to the bonus round. They will keep increasing by x1 via the same mechanic as in the base game until they reach the maximum of x7 and will not reset between free spins.
Final Verdict
The questions of whether the third time will be indeed the charm remains. I can see very little difference to the other two titles in the series that would let Prism of Gems stand on its own. The mechanics are especially comparable to Perfect Gems, although the win potential on this occasion is massively higher. Instead of the usual 5,000x bet as win cap, Prism of Gems boasts a maximum of 30,000x. Time will tell if this will be the breakthrough for Play’n GO’s proprietary Payways game engine.
