Review
Join the lords of thrash metal on the branded slot from Play’n GO. Named after the band, Testament brings the cult music and legendary icons to a set of variable reels with up to 2,400 ways to win. Based on their 2012 album Dark Roots of Earth, you can look forward to wild substitutions, random wild transformations, a Song feature with three possible modifiers and a free spins round that will expand the reels to trigger the coveted Testament Spins with expanding and sticky wilds that can lead to wins of up to 20,000 times your bet.
Slot Details
Testament is a video slot with five reels, three rows and 243 ways to win as default. This can increase up to a 4-5-6-5-4 size with 2,400 payways during the free spins feature. Wins are awarded for three to five matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right only. You can headbang on desktop or mobile from 0.10 to 100 credits per spin. The game has maximum volatility (10/10) with a default RTP of 96.20%. Some operators might offer it with secondary RTP settings of 94.20 or even as low as 91.20%, always read the help file to find out which version you will be playing.
The design team at Play’n GO chose to go primarily with visuals that resemble the record cover of the Dark Roots of Earth album and included common icons from the thrash metal scene as pay symbols. As expected, it all as a dark and sinister feeling with skulls, vampires and werewolves dominating the reels. It will all turn into a blazing Judgement Day scene during the bonus features.
The pay symbols start at the low end with the card royals from J through to A, awarding 0.5x to 1x your bet for a single five of a kind. They are followed by shields, skeletons, werewolves, vampires and skulls. Hit five across the reels to win 2.5x to 12.5x your stake.
The skull symbol will turn randomly into a wild symbol on any spin in the base game and on every spin in the bonus feature, substituting for all regular pay symbols. Landing five wild skulls on the reels will pay 15x your bet. The album’s cover image acts as the scatter.
Testament Slot Features
Creating a standard slot would not do justice to the wild temperament and aggressive nature of thrash metal music. The creators at Play’n GO went to great length to convey the spirit of the band and their music to a set of slot reels and included a range of features that will come down hard accompanied by a fitting sound arrangement.
The first modifier you need to keep an eye on, especially in the base game, are the top-paying skull symbols. They will randomly change colour and turn into wild demon symbols for the current spin, providing extra potential to score a win. The skull will always turn wild during the free spins.
Hitting two scatters on a spin is usually called a ‘teaser spin’ as you just missed out on triggering the bonus feature. On Testament, however, it becomes an opportunity to score a sizeable win as it will trigger Song feature, during which all skull symbols will always transform into a wild. Three free spins are awarded with one of the three modifiers.
- Dark Roots of Earth: Wild symbols spread up or down, creating more wilds.
- Throne of Thorns: Reels expand to the maximum 4-5-6-5-4 size with 2,400 ways for all three spins.
- Cold Embrace: All wild symbols are frozen in place for the duration of the feature.
Landing three to five scatters will trigger the Rise Up Spins. Plus, four or five scatters will pay 5x and 20x your bet respectively. The game window changes with the extra rows on top covered by blockers. Any scatter appearing on a free spin will destroy one blocker on the same reel and gradually increase the game window until it reaches the maximum 4-5-6-5-4 size with 2,400 payways. It will stay expanded until the end of the feature.
But that’s not all as destroying all blockers will also trigger the Testament Spins. The game will award an additional +3 free spins. All remaining free spins will then be played with all Song modifiers active, meaning that wilds will become sticky and also spread up or down. The game window resets to the default 5×3 size once the feature concludes.
Final Verdict
Testament has some resemblance with the 2018 released Dragon Maiden slot. While the two-scatter Song feature is more elaborate, the mechanics in the free spins are similar. What is very different though is the maximum win potential. While on Dragon Maiden it is the Play’n GO usual 5,000x bet, it is capped at a loud 20,000x on Testament. Well worth that blaring guitar riff coming from the speakers.
