Enter the medieval tavern for a jug of mead and some good old fashioned board game fun on the slot from Relax Gaming. Heroe’s Gathering is a clever mix of a 5×3 reel set with a traditional board game that will see you advancing on a track in two bonus modes to collect prize money and bet multipliers for wins of up to 2,000 times your bet.

Slot Details

Heroe’s Gathering is a video slot with five reels, three rows and 20 fixed pay lines. Wins are awarded for three to five matching symbols on a line from left to right only. You can sit down for a round on the board game on desktop or mobile from 0.10 to 100 credits per spin. The slot has medium volatility with an RTP of 96.45%

A medieval table in a fantasy tavern serves as the canvas for the game window which is encased by the track of the board game you will be playing in the bonus rounds. Mead jugs, keys, gold coins and games are scattered across the scenery while a rather tranquil acoustic soundtrack stands in contrast to the action on the reels.

The pay symbols are divided into three sets which will play a significant role during the bonus features. Starting at the low end are three medieval-looking bronze coins marked with green, purple and red gems. On the medium level are three silver-encased icons – a set of knives, a magic book and a coats of arms. A single five of a kind will award 4x to 7.5x your bet. The premiums come with a golden frame, in ascending order they are goblin, wizard and a medieval knight. Hit five on a line to win 10x to 20x your bet.

A blazing icon marked with the word itself is the wild and top symbol, substituting for all regular symbols and paying 50x your stake for five across the reels. A flag standard crossed with axes and swords acts as the scatter on this slot while a wheel icon can land on reel three during the bonus feature.

Heroes’ Gathering Slot Features

We reviewed some board game-style slots already and all had one thing in common, a long list of rules akin a manual for a real board game. Trust that this one is no different at first sight as we found out when firing up the game for our test runs. But it all looks much more convoluted than it is in reality and a few rounds will clear things up pretty quickly.

At the core are two bonus features that are triggered when you land two or three scatters. Hitting a scatter on reels one, three and five will trigger the Main Board Game feature. The board game around the reels will now be activated, showing a circular track with bronze, silver and gold spots corresponding to the pay symbol sets, blank spots, corner spots and start/finish spot.

Three amulets will appear on the side of the game window, each with a prize pot for every pay symbol set – bronze, silver and gold. The game will start spinning as usual and landing a win will be paid as normal before the double amount is added to the corresponding pot. For example, scoring a win of 2 credits with any bronze coin symbols will add 4 credits to the bronze pot.

To get around the track, you will need to hit the wheel icon on reel three. It will spin once to determine how many steps from 1 – 6 your pawn will advance on the track. Landing on a bronze, silver or gold spot will add one piece to the corresponding amulet. Stopping on a corner area will randomly add extra coins to the amulet pots – 5x or 10x bet to all pots, 20x or 100x to one of the three pots. Landing on the corner square or going full circle will remove any collected pieces, further extending the bonus game. Should you be so lucky to land exactly on the start/finish spot, then all values on the amulet pots are doubled. The bonus game ends if you collect three matching pieces within one track round. The corresponding amulet pot is then awarded on top of the winnings from the free spins.

Hitting only two scatters in one spin will trigger the Board Game Mini version of the bonus round. The main difference is that the first square your pawn stops on will make the corresponding amulet the only pot for the round. For example, stopping on a silver spot will remove the bronze and gold pot as well as turn all corresponding squares into silver spots. The result is that you will collect three pieces much quicker as all squares are now of the same colour. Plus, the corner spots award only 5x, 10x or 50x to your active pot and you will need to go full circle to have any collected pieces removed from the amulet. In essence, it is a mini bonus round that will end usually with a lower win, still better than having 2-scatter teaser spins as on other slots.

Final Verdict

Well, I hope that made all sense as it sure looks mightily complicated at first glance. However, bear with it for a few rounds and it will all become clear just like when you play a new board game for the first time. The Mini round turned out to be over rather quick in most cases but the Main feature has quite some potential to deliver mega wins. The maximum is 2,000 times your bet, not overly high but well sufficient considering the volatility.
