Time will tell if more will follow as the first titles have yet to show a similar impact as the Megaways games. With Krystal Klusters Megaclusters they created a slight variation of the pay mechanic although essentially it is too simply increasing the number of symbols. Well, let’s take a closer look.

A spin sequence starts with a set of symbols dropping from the top onto the 5×5 grid. Each symbol can appear as a single, double, triple or quadruple with a cluster of minimum 8 matching symbols needed to score a winner. The combo will then shatter and new symbols will cascade into the empty spaces, potentially creating more winners.

And here comes the first twist, the Symbol Upgrade. Once a winning cluster is removed, all symbols that were adjacent to it will be upgraded to the next level, for example, a single symbol to a double; thus making it easier to hit another winning cluster. The process is repeated throughout a spin sequence until they are upgraded to quadruples.

The second twist are progressive Win Multipliers. The octagonal gems can land at any time throughout a spin sequence with x1, x2, x3, x4, x5 or x10 as base multiplier. While they do not increase a winning cluster, they will stay on the grid until the end of a spin and can be upgraded up to three times, increasing it by the base value on each occasion, for example, an x2 multiplier will increase progressively to x4, x6, and ultimately x8. The upgrade is triggered every time a multiplier symbol was connected to a winning combo. Any multiplier or the sum of all if there is more than one in view will be applied to the total winnings from the spin after a game round concludes.

While seeing symbols cascade and clusters explode, keep an eye on the gem bar at the bottom of the grid. Each winning cluster will illuminate one and getting to six will trigger one of three random modifiers. This can happen repeatedly within a spin sequence but only one will be applied for each trigger:

• Krystal Vanish: All occurrences of one crystal are removed from the grid and new symbols avalanche into the empty spaces.
• Krystal Boost: All regular symbols except scatters on the grid will be upgraded by one level
• Krystal Kut: All single symbols in view are removed from the grid and new once drop into the empty spots.

Watch out for the gold-framed Bonus scatter appearing anywhere on the grid. Initially, it will have one gem with the aim to upgrade it to four and trigger 7 Free Spins. To do that, it will need to be adjacent to a winning cluster, which will add one crystal to the scatter. Collecting again four within a free spin sequence will retrigger +4 spins, no limits. The modifiers can be activated just like in the base game while multipliers can appear too. However, there are no other extras in the free spins.

Final Verdict

Similar to their Megaways debut with Temple Tumble, Relax Gaming has managed to put the new game engine to good use and created with Krystal Klusters Megaclusters an impressive slot. Plus, they have managed the visibility of symbols much better than BTG on their Star Clusters slot by simply keeping always the same size. Overall, a very playable slot with ample feature and high entertainment factor as well as decent win potential that peaks just shy of 10,000x bet.
