Explore the endless savannah on a slot safari by Triple Edge Studios, powered by Microgaming. African Quest will take you on a high-volatility reel ride through the vast wilderness of the African continent on a 1,024 ways game grid with wild substitutions, a Paid Respin feature and a range of free spin rounds with multipliers of up to x64 that can lead to wins of up to 5,600 times your stake.

Slot Details

African Quest is a video slot with five reels, three rows and 1,024 ways to win. Pays are awarded for two to five matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right only. You can go on a safari on desktop or mobile from 0.10 to 15 credits per spin. The game has high volatility with a default RTP of 96.02%. Using the Paid Respins feature will increase it up to 96.52%.

Loading the game will take you to the heart of the African savannah, although the visuals are not superbly done. Nevertheless, Acacia trees in the distance and the usual animals roaming in the background give it an authentic feeling, which is further emphasized by the drumbeat soundtrack.

The pay symbols start at the low end with the card royals from 9 through to A, awarding 2.5x your bet for a single five of a kind. They are followed by zebras, giraffes, rhinos, elephants as well as the lion which is the only symbol that can appear stacked at all times.  Hit five across the reels to win 3x to 7.5 times your stake. An Acacia tree at sunset is the wild symbol, appearing on the three centre reels only and substituting for all regular symbols. An icon with the African map acts as the scatter.

African Quest Slot Features

The gameplay on this slot is defined by one feature for each phase. In the base game, it is the Hyperspins feature that we have seen on prior slots such as Break Da Bank Again Respin. It will come into play once the reels have stopped and offer you to respin each reel separately at a defined cost to potentially land a missing scatter or pay symbol. A bar at the bottom of the reels will appear with a display for the cost and a respin button for each reel. Obviously, the cost will increase the higher the win potential in case the missing symbol lands on the respin. Changing bet sizes will clear the respin options.

The second part of the excitement on African Quest is provided by the Free Spins feature, which is triggered by landing three or more scatters in one spin. The game will pay 2x, 10x and 20x your total bet as a coin win for three, four and five scatters respectively, plus offer you three choices for the round. You can pick any of the options on every occasion. Retriggers are awarded for two to five scatters yielding 3 to 40 extra free spins based on which feature you have chosen.

  • Three scatters: 5 free spins with x3 and x4 | 8 free spins with x2 and x3 | 12 free spins with x1 and x2 wild multipliers
  • Four scatters: 10 free spins with x3 and x4 | 15 free spins with x2 and x3 | 20 free spins with x1 and x2 wild multipliers
  • Five scatters: 15 free spins with x3 and x4 | 20 free spins with x2 and x3 | 40 free spins with x1 and x2 wild multipliers

Any wild landing on the three centre reels in a free spin will reveal one of the two multipliers available in the round. More than one multiplier will be multiplied by each other, however, only wins containing the wild will be multiplied. The maximum wild multiplier peaks at x64 should you land wilds on all three centre reels and unveil x4 multipliers. The best moment to hit the top win of 5,600 times your bet.

Final Verdict

Raging Rhino fans, are you reading this? While there are some clear differences, there is no doubt as to where Microgaming and Triple Edge Studios took their inspiration for African Quest. Admittedly, they were neither the first to do so, nor probably the last. In some way, it is a tribute to the immensely popular game WMS released nearly a decade ago. Overall, African Quest looks OK albeit the visuals not being up there with the best and the gameplay delivers what it says on the tin. We do recommend however some caution when using the respin feature as it can quickly lead down a rabbit hole with no guarantee that the missing symbol will land.
